Libraries Day - 5 December 2012

The Malta Libraries Council (MLC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Employment and the Schools’ Library Service is organising a Libraries Day on the 5 December 2012.

The main objective of Libraries Day is to raise awareness of the importance of libraries and the role they have in the promotion of democracy and in providing access to information, education and recreation.

All types of libraries are being encoraged to mark this day by orgaising activities and/or extending their opening hours for the benefit of all their users. All llibraries who will be celebrating Libraries Day on the 5 December 2012 should complete the form available on the Libraries Day Activities page and they will be listed on this page.

 

Activities being held at various libraries across Malta and Gozo

National Library of Malta

 
  • Exhibition : P. Anastasju Cuschieri, O.Carm.  50 years from his death.
  • Extended opening hours for visitors and researchers till 8pm
  • The National Library also welcomes school visits on that day between 9 and 1pm.  Maximum number of students per group :50

Central Public Library, Floriana


  • 8.30am till noon - Orientation Visits
  • 12.30 till 13.30 - Activity for Adults @ the Reference library (demonstration)
  • 16.00 till 17.00 - Storytelling and Young Talent for kids
  • 17.15 till 18.15 - Christmas crafts from recycled material at the Reference Library
  • During the day there will be an exhibition displaying hand made creations of Maltese crafts.

Birkirkara Public Library


  • Extended opening hours
  • Stort telling for children ages 6 to 8 years from 5.00pm to 6.00 pm. The Hon. Minister of Education and Emplyment, Dolores Cristina, will be attending this event.

Schools Library Services


  • The Schools Library Service (SLS) which forms part of the Student Services Department in the Directorate for Educational Services (DES) is organising an informative talk and hands on experience for over 90 state and non-state Secondary Schools library helpers. The presentation will describe the role of a student helper in a school library and show how the school library is arranged. The emphases on words such as Fiction, Reference Melitensia and Dewey Decimal Classification, Special Collection Scheme and last but not least the important role of the OLIVER Library Management Software will be highlighted.
  • All students will be presented with a complimentary copy of a book to mark the occasion.

 Naxxar Public Library


  • Extended opening hours from 8.30 a.m to 6.30 p.m
  • Orientation visits to the libray from the Naxxar Primary School classes
  • Story telling by Trevor Zahra at 5.00pm
  • Demonstration on how to access the online catalogue and renew books online
  • Display of new acquisitions

Msida Public LIbrary


  • Christmas at the library. Activities will include story telling, games such awa word search and crafts. All activities will be related to the Christmas festivities.

 Pembroke Public Library


  • Extended opening hours from 5.00 pm to 9.00 pm 
  • Book author Clare Azzopardi will be reading to children at 6pm, taking different excerpts from her books. 
  • Local Painter Karen Caruana will have her works exhibited in the Library premises all throughout the Library's opening hours. Some of her paintings are available online at http://www.saatchionline.com/KarenC
  • Will also be assembling free copies of JRS book in Maltese to small children (http://www.jrsmalta.org/content.aspx?id=314726)  
  • Pembroke local author Adrian Grima will do book-reading for adolescents at 7pm till around 8pm.  
  • An Information stand will be set up - where flyers of local art/book-related events/educational activities/exhibitions will be available at the stand 
  • Some small refreshments will be served - these will be sponsored by the Local Council.

 Senglea Public Library


  • Story Telling from 4.30pm - 5.30pm (0-3 years)
  • Story Telling from 5.30pm - 6.30pm (4-6 years)
  • Presentation of books to three children who used the library frequently during summer holidays.
  • Encourage users to use the library during the Christmas holidays.

 MCAST Main Library (Paola)


  • Ms. Clare Azzopardi will be present to promote her latest teen novel 'Frejp' between 09.30 am to 11.00 am.

 School Library at Maria Regina College, Boys' Secondary School, Mosta


  • We will be organising a three-day book fair at our library, including the 5th of December 2012. 
  • We will be taking five of our library helpers to a training seminar organised by the Schools Library Service. 
  • One of the library induction sessions for Form 1 students has been scheduled to take place on this day.

 Mellieha Public Library


  • The Library will be open from 12.00-6.00pm. (2 hrs extra).
  • From 12.00-2.00, students from Years1 to 6 will be shown round the library and informed how a library operates. Students will be encouraged to join the library.
  • From 2.00 till 6.00, the library will be open for the general public as usual.

 St Martin's College Library


  • Human Rights Week is being celebrated at St Martin's College between 3rd and 7th December.
  • The library will exhibit resources related to Human Rights and a special emphasis will be placed on literacy as a basic human right.
  • Many other activities will be held in the library during that week including a talk by the Jesuit Refugee Service, a talk by Helen D'Amato, Commissioner for Children, the screening of the film 'The rabbit proof fence'. 
  • On 5th December Junior 6 students will have a discussion on the importance of literacy and how their school library provides access to resources that enhance both their recreational and learning experience

Librerija Dun Karm Schembri, Mosta

  • Extended opening hours from 5.00pm to 6.00pm
  • There will be story telling by Mr Joe Quattromani and Ms Grace Anne Mifsud.

St.Paul's Bay Public Library


  • The library will also be open on the 5 December 2012 from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm to mark Libraries Day 2012 (apart from normal schedule).

Gzira Public Library


  • Library will be extending the opening hours from 11.00 am till 7.00 pm giving ample opportunity for people who cannot come to the library in the morning to do so in the afternoon and evening.
  • During the morning there will be orientation visits and story telling for the Gzira Primary School students.
  • In the evening there will be a talk by Mr.Charles Micallef St.John about his published books from 5p.m. Everyone is invited to come.
  • Refreshments after the talk will be offered, courtsey of the Local Council.

Marsaskala Public Library


  • Library will be open from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm
  • Story telling activies wll be organised and at 1.30 pm local author Trevor Zahra wll be present.

 Nutar Francesco Catania Public Library (Rabat)


  • Opening hours will be extended till 7:00 p.m.
  • A bonus Reading and Rhymes session for children from 0 to 3 years will be held between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Story teller Ms Helen Burrows will be dressed as Snow White, while a balloon modeller, dressed as a clown will be twisting balloons for the kids. Children's music will be played in the background.
  • A donation by the mayor of Rabat, Mr Sandro Craus will take place at 10:00 a.m. This donation will consist of a number of books and other items for the library.

Zebbug (Gozo) Public Library


  • 8:30 am- 9:15 am - Questionnaire that will be filled by Yr 5 & Yr 6 students showing opinions and giving feedback on favourite books & authors.
  • 9:15 am - 10:00 am - Appreciation of library rules - quiet reading inside the library for Yr 3 & Yr 4 students.
  • 10:00 am - 10:30 am - Story telling for students of Yr 1 & Yr 2 to create a more friendly environment inside the library.
  • A notice has been put up for the general public to view the newly purchased adult books recently donated by Iz-Zebbug Gozo Local Council.
  • A bookmark will be given for the occasion.

Sliema Public Library

Gozo Cathedral Public Library


  • The Gozo Cathedral Public Library – one of the major public libraries of Gozo – will participate in the Libraries Day 2012 by an open morning, on Saturday, 1 December between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm and again on Wednesday, 5 December between 9am and noon and between 5.00 pm and 7.00pm.

National Library (Gozo)


  • 10.00a.m.:  Discussion with the theme "The book and writing". The discussion will include a panel made up of Mr George N. Cassar, Mr Joe W. Psaila, Mr Joe Camilleri, Mons. Dr. Joe Bezzina. The discussion will be coordinated by Kav. Joe M. Attard. After the discussion, the Minister for Gozo, the Hon. Giovanna Debono will inaugurate a plaque with the names of librarians and officials who have been in charge of the library.
  • During this day, the names of the Public Library in Vajringa Street and Gozo Lending Library in St Francis Square (both in Victoria) will change to National Library (Gozo) / Librerija Nazzjonali (Għawdex) and Gozo Central Public Library / Librerija Pubblika Ċentrali ta’ Għawdex respectively.

Zurrieq Public Library

  • Extended opening hours - 8.00 am till 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm till 6.00 pm to mark Libraries Day 2012.

University of Malta Library

  • Pin up your Comments!
    A notice board will be set up in the Library Foyer. Students can write their comments, suggestions or questions in the already prepared forms which can be found near the notice board. The submissions must be all related in one way or another to the Main Library, its branches and services. Comments, suggestions or questions can be anonymous since students can opt not to write their email address. Answers to any comments, suggestions or questions will be uploaded on the Library Notices page and emailed to the students if they opt to note down the email address. The Library is continually trying to find ways how to make users aware of its large number of services. On this occasion the Library will become aware of the users' comments and thoughts, through this special notice board - so do not hesitate to Pin up your Comments!
  • Photo Exhibition: How Biology Can Save the World
    The Science Students' Society (S-Cubed) has organised a science photo exhibition in collaboration with the Society of Biology (UK). The exhibition, entitled "How Biology Can Save the World" features a number of photos submitted from around the world showing the importance and impact Biology can have in our everyday life.The Society of Biology is a charitable organisation representing all who are committed to biology in academia, industry, education and research and strives to engage and encourage public interest in the life sciences. The Science Students' Society is a faculty based organisation representing all students enrolled with the Faculty of Science. It seeks to promote unity amongst science students through social and educational activities.
  • Art Exhibition: Children & the Sea
    The exhibition presents a series of thought provoking art works of our oceans and coastal environments as portrayed by children from different countries, including Malta. The paintings, executed in response to an invitation from the International Ocean Institute'€™s (IOI) operational centres, reflect the beauty and richness of the world'€™s oceans, coasts and marine life and the concerns, as expressed by children, for their protection. Each painting shares with the viewer the child'€™s unique vision and environmental concerns. Among the subjects covered are: the richness of our oceans and their ability to sustain life, the need to protect marine life from over-exploitation and pollution and the beauty and occasional wrath of the sea. The latter is poignantly expressed in the painting entitled, Tsunami I Remember. The works are on loan from the headquarters of the IOI, Malta. The exhibition is located in the Foyer (Level I) and can be viewed during Library opening hours.
  • Exhibition: Treasures of The University of Malta Library
    The exhibition, '€œTreasures of The University of Malta Library' serves to highlight the range and depth of the University of Malta Library'€™s Special Collections. It brings to the attention of the public not only works of importance to the history of our Alma Mater but also works of Melitensia interest as well as others included for their rarity, content interest and fine bindings. The exhibition is located in the Foyer (Level I) and can be viewed during Library opening hours.
  • Exhibition: Vocabolario della Crusca – 400th Anniversary, 1612-2012
    This year the Accademia della Crusca is celebrating the 400th anniversary of the first edition of its famous 'Vocabolario', published in 1612, which set new standards in lexicography. In fact it was the model on which were based the 'Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française' (1694), the Spanish 'Diccionario de la lengua castellana' (1726-39), Samuel Johnson's 'Dictionary of the English Language' (1786) and the Grimm Brothers' 'Deutsches Worterbuch' (1854). To mark the occasion the University Library is exhibiting its copy of the fourth edition (1729-38) with other printed materials about the Crusca in a showcase on the right of the hall leading to the Reference Section, including a de luxe reprint of the first edition kindly lent by Professor Joseph M. Brincat, member of the Accademia.

Qormi (San Gorg) Public Library


  • Extended opening hours on Wednesday 5th December 2012 betwee 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm hrs to mark Libraries Day 2012.
  • Demonstration about the services of the library to parents will be held between 2.00pm - 4.00pm

Paola Public Library


  • Extended opening hours from 8.30 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. 
  • 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. Orientation visits to the library and small library duties like circulation duties and date stamping on books will be carried out from the Paola Primary School students. 
  • 9:00a.m. To celebrate Library Day 2012, the Paola Local Council will donate a considerable amount of newly purchased adult and children's books.
  • 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. Artist Mr. Raymond Abela, in collaboration with the Paola Local Council, and Ms. Josette Cassar, Headmistress of Paola Primary School, will be organising informative talks, while giving hands-on experience with clay in the form of an interactive activity for Paola Primary school students whereby children will take part and build their own creations with clay. Following this activity, small refreshments will be served to all children, courtesy of the Paola Local Council. 
  • 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Storytelling in Maltese for children aged 4 to 8 years in collaboration with the Fondazzjoni Ghal Servizzi Edukattivi. Some small refreshments will also be served.
  • A competition will be organised for all people visiting Paola Library on the 5th December 2012. Visitors will be encouraged to share their ideas how the Paola Library could be improved, and the best idea would be the winner. The Paola Local Councillors will be the judges in this competition.

Qrendi Public Library

  • Story telling sessions for students (year 5 and year 6)
  • Library will be opening onWednesday 5th December 2012 between 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm.

Gharb Public Library

  • We will be opening the library on Wednesday 5th December from 8.00 am - 1.00 pm 
  • On 6th December the Gharb Local Council will organise a special activity for the local primary school children that includes story telling sessions by the Maltese author Ms Natalie Portelli.

Zurrieq Public Library

  • The Library will be open for the entire day during the 5th December to mark Libraries Day 2012 (8.00 am till 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm till 6.00 pm).

St. Nicholas College Girls' Secondary School, Rabat

  • A special assembly consisting of a short 5 minute play that explains the importance of libraries. A scientist used the library to invent a particular plant. Someone manages to acquire the plant and wants to destroy all the libraries. This ensures that no one else will invent anything similar or identical. If libraries are destroyed, no one would have access to knowledge and the newly invented plant can be sold at very high prices. 
  • Following the play two students will act out a joke from the book 'Cajta bejn Tnejn'. 
  • Three small spot prizes will be drawn to students that borrowed books this scholatic year. During the day, 5 library helpers will visit the Schools Library Services. The quiz collected from SLS will be distributed to students and certificates will be distributed to library helpers. 

Marsaxlokk Public Library

  • Extended opening hours from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm (apart from the normal opening hours). 
  • Demonstration on how to access the online catalogue, renewal and reservation of books will be given on a one-to-one basis. 

Hamrun Public Library

  • Extended opening hours - 1.00p.m to 6.00p.m 
  • Story telling for children - 4.00pm to 6.00 pm. 
  • New Books available from 4.00p.m onwards

School Library Maria Regina College, Girls' Secondary School, Mosta

  • During the morning assembly, a message about the use of libraries is going to be read in English by a teacher-librarian and in Maltese by a student library-helper. 
  • There is going to be a presentation on a new book called "Fid-Dell tal-Mantell Iswed" by Andreas Camilleri, a teacher at Higher Secondary School Naxxar. 
  • A group of library helpers will be visiting the Schools Library Service in St. Julian's. 
  • During the week, the library helpers and teacher-librarians will also be selling books in a fund-raising activity for the school.

Newark School Library, Sliema


  • On 5th December we are going to dedicate the morning assembly to the importance of reading. 
  • Junior 1 are going to sing a nursrey ryhme: They have also drawn up a chart about it and coloured it. 
  • Junior 2 are going to read extracts from the Bible - very short ones. 
  • In Junior 3, 2 or 3 children are bringing the book they like best and say why they like it. 
  • In Junior 4 we have an 8 year old girl who loves to write short stories and poems in English (she is foreign). She will read one of her poems and say which book she likes best and why. 
  • In Junior 5, 6, Form 1 and Form 2 we have students saying how they enjoy reading and saying something about the type of books they like most. 
  • We have also quotes showing the importance of reading. The children will hold these on charts during assembly. 

Sta. Lucija Public Library

  • During the past days we have devised a set of meetings with Ms. Margaret Psaila where reading sessions were given. For these meetings parents were also invited.
  • In the junior section, the importance of reading and writing was emphasised, inviting children to share their creative writing.

Kalkara Public Library


  • 9.00 am - 10.00 am - Health Services
  • 10:30 am to 11:30 am - Discussion on the use of medical equipment. Speaker: Ms Josephine Xuereb N.O Midwife from Emcare.
  • 4.00 pm - 5.00 pm - discussion for children (7 to 9 years) together with parents from the 'Dog Trust'. Educational games about dogs with our special guest 'Kathy'. Speaker - Ms Christina Pace, Educational Officer, 'Dog Trust'.

Hal Gharghur Public Library


  • On the 5 December 2012, the library will be open at these times: 8.30am -12.30pm and from 2.30pm-4.30pm
  • On that day members from the Hal Gharghur Local Council will be donating books to the library.
